From the community of Oropouche, located in south Trinidad comes the group Mission Epistle. "We see ourselves as a group of young people whose life is a letter, on which Christ has written. In order for us to share what he has given us we use our music to allow listens to read the good news of Jesus Christ." said Keron Thomas, the group's leader.
Born to Joseph and Jennifer Thomas this young life has been through a lot. Straying from the Christian life at a young age Keron began to attend parties and engaged in promiscuous behavior. It was truly a dark time in not only Keron's life but also his parents. Being a Pastor who has to stand in church every Sunday with your son unsaved was difficult for Pastor Thomas. He longed to see his son repent and accept Jesus Christ as Lord.
It was a young woman, Nicole filled with the Holy Ghost who would eventually return Keron to his rightful place. Keron had a strong liking towards this Christian young woman and would intentionally attend church to see her. This young woman was truly strong willed since instead of giving in to being his girlfriend she opted to being his friend. Something Keron didn't fancy but this young woman wasn't pleased with his current lifestyle and in no way was going to get involved with him.
After a few months Keron encounter a terrible situation in which he was unable to overcome, and like the prodigal son all his worldly friends departed from him. The one person who stood by his side was Nicole. She showed him love during his down time and so led him once more to the Lord Jesus Christ. Keron and Nicole are now happily married for the last four (5) years.
After realizing that God was the only true source, Keron decided to return to his creator however he didn't return empty handed but with a new found talent- singing. He pursued the career and founded the group Mission Epistle.
Keron Thomas has had the fore sight of birthing a musical group for a long time. Initially Mission Epistle was started with his wife Nicole, Neil the keyboardist and himself. They would frequently minister at various church functions and all who came into contact with their music was blessed. It was Keron's father Pastor Joseph Thomas who coined the word Mission Epistle and thus giving the group its identity. Their music was culturally based, heavily influenced by Soca, Calypso and Reggae, even to this day the group continues to maintain a strong appeal to Caribbean listeners.
Keron's vision went way beyond ministry just in church and thus he embarked on a journey to recruit a team of young men and women who would have a passion and hunger for the things of Christ. Along the way many decisions had to be made toward releasing members who did not share the same the vision as Mission Epistle, but as any good leader he dealt with each situation with the help of God and advice of good counsel.
Initially Mission Epistle got its first break whilst under the group Christ Dymensions. At that time Keron Thomas and Victor "Big V" Ackee were the front line singers
Big V together with Keron spearheaded the release of two tracks. Music Influence on the "Blessed Riddim" and Mission Definition on the "Versatile Vintage Riddim" out of Christ Dymensions's camp. This start is what pivoted the group to new heights and it moved them from not only ministering in churches around the area, but it gave them the opportunity to touch lives across the whole nation.
Because of this move Mission Epistle was featured in Pilgrimage one of the year's biggest Gospel Concert as a part of Christ Dymensions where they performed the song "Mission Definition" for a huge crowd in 2002 at Mobs 2 Chagaramus. The crowd was truly blessed and Mission Epistle made a stamp on the music industry in Trinidad. They were in high demand following the concert and so the group covered a lot of Trinidad, touring and ministering to people along the way. It would take another year before the group released another track out of Christ Dymensions's Camp.
The track "Pray For We" over the Fully Loaded Riddim received #1 status on the Riddim. The same energy and drive that Big V and Keron had delivered previously was still here and in fact it had grown. They performed the song also under Christ Dymensions at Vibe in 2003. The level of maturity and skill on the mike that they possessed was as a direct result of ministering around the country and sinking deeper into God's word.
As the group grew, it seemed as though the Lord was indicating a change. Big V felt the need to pursue another area in ministry. So with the council of Pastor Indar and encouraging words from Keron, Big V was released, the beautiful combination of Big V and Keron came to an abrupt end, however Mission had to go on. With this change Mission Epistle felt the need to expand and thus they moved out of the wings of Christ Dymensions to stand on their own in the gospel music industry.
In an effort to follow the calling of the Lord, Keron contacted a rising group Disciples For Christ in an effort to merge and join forces. It was in that merging where Keron would soon find his new collaborators. Of the seven young men in DFC Keron felt an unusual connection between two of the group's members, Dwayne Bedeau and Jason Joefield. They had the spirit, the charisma and energy he needed for up-liftment, and so with the council of Pastor Indar, both Jason Joefield and Dwayne was added to the group. This change really boosted the group and a new Mission Epistle was born.
In the early quarter of 2004 Mission Epistle came into contact with an uprising producer and great artiste in his own right, Sherwin Gardner. Sherwin helped the new, reformed group to produce their first single "Worship You". Several other singles ensued including "Truly" and "United" featuring Spiritual Ninja.
At this point in time Keron Thomas was making frequent trips to the isle of spice, Grenada and sharing the music of Mission Epistle with the natives there. The music was received well and in July of that year the band when on a missionary trip to Grenada and ministered in a week long VBS, often taking over the classes and teaching the children various arts and craft, and a week long Crusade, where the group had to split to attend various Baptist churches across the island. The climax of the weeklong proceeding was a concert, which also featured another Trinidadian based group CYI. A devastating storm, Ivan hit the island on September 16th, a day the group will never forget, and before the month was over Keron and Dwayne were on their way to Grenada loaded with clothes and food supplies.
2005 proved to be a great year for Mission Epistle. This is the year where fate stepped in, and a door was opened where the group would be able to do a lot of studio work that was necessary at this point in time in the groups' life. Jason met a budding new producer from Canada via the internet and they exchanged several emails, coincidentally the producer was coming to Trinidad to live. Mark "Jah Servant" Giles was introduced to the group and immediately a bond was formed and so they began working together. In the latter part of 2005 Jah Servant offered the group to be a part of his newly established label, Servant's Records.
On April 13th in Grenada the group launched their album entitled "Stand Up" which features various genres of music including Soca, Roots and Dancehall. They featured various local artists on the album including Musical Schizophrenia Gitta Dan. The album is proving to be a success by many patrons and a launch is carded for Trinidad in July of this year. This group is truly on the rise and with their versatility in music and walk with God they are destined to do great and mighty things for God through their music.
Exclusive Interview with GospelReggae.com
GR: How did you begin doing music?
Keron: Actually my father is the one who inspired me to get into music. He was and still is a great songwriter and his achievements in music really inspired me to get into music and form my own group.
GR: What has been the greatest mistake that you have made in ministry and learned from? How have you used this experience to change the way you approach ministry?
Dwayne: Well, I would have to say making a blunder in my Christian walk and not resolving it with Christ, yet still going onto a stage to minister. It always creates a flop so I've learned through that to always put God first, everything else after.
GR: I know that you have written a whole heap of songs in the past, but what's your favorite one? Now, if that is too hard for you to answer, then tell me this; if you spent 5 minutes with an avid reggae fan and only had enough time to play them one of your songs, which one would you play them?
Keron: One of the earliest songs, "Worship You" wrote this one with my wife Nicole. Square also had an input in the song since both of us worked close to each other so on a lunch period we finished it. As a group we love worshiping God.
Silent-Sah: I'll play "Sing Praises" because that's the testimony of when I got the heart attack, well it wasn't a literally one, muscles around my heart was squeezing it and I was receiving severe chest pains. Doctors said if I hadn't come in the time I did I would have suffered a bad heart attack. Also the song reflects on when our house was gutted with fire. So I'll just want them to hear about what God has done for me
J Square: "Meditate" for sure, because honestly I want people to know it's more about waking up on a morning and praying or reading your bible. It's that but it's more than that. It's daily thinking about Him and being in His presence…whether it is in a bus in a car on the job, it doesn't matter. Meditate.
GR: What's your favorite verse in the Bible and why?
J Square: Eph 3:20-21 When you sit down and meditate on that scripture verse and u realize you are serving a God that can do, not just a little but far above what we can imagine or think. I can imagine living on Mars; I can imagine ministering to millions of people I can imagine seeing a dead man, resurrected or a person with AIDS getting healed, then to realize I'm serving a God that is able to do far above that. Selah
GR: What Bible character do you most identify yourself with?
Nicole: Job. Whatsoever test or trials he went through he still had faith that God would see him through.
GR: Name one thing that fans do not know about you.
Silent-Sah: People look at me and they believe that I'm quiet and I don't smile. Many believe I don't like people and I like to remain to myself, but the truth is I love people and I'm very friendly, I just have a quiet personality, hence the name.
GR: What are the three things you enjoy most about touring? And least?
Keron: The three things I enjoy most about touring is (1) I love to sing, most definitely (2) I love ministering the word of God wherever I go and touring allows me this opportunity and (3) I love meeting new people. What I don't like is being away from my family; well at least most times I have my wife with me.
GR: What is the best audience that you have ever played in front of?
Silent-Sah: The best audience? Well I would have to say Grenada. Every time we go there the people show us nuff love and it was truly a blessing the first time we went, when I looked into the crowd the people where singing the songs word for word. That really touched me.
GR: What goes through your mind before you go onstage at the average show?
Keron: before I go on stage I try to shut everything out, mentally, to the point where it's just me and Christ and my main focus then at that point in time is to create an atmosphere for the Holy Spirit to dwell in so someone's life will be changed through the presence of God.
GR: If you could whisper in the ears of youths aspiring to start a music ministry like yours, what would you say?
J Square: How you present yourself is how people will see you and accept you as. If you are now starting, begin with excellence and present yourself as a young professional who knows what they are about, and people after some time will treat you like that. What you settle for is what you will have.
GR: Are you working on any future projects/releases that we should look out for?
J Square: Well currently we're working on a project with Jah Servant. Name of the album is "The UK meets TnT Inna Riddim Session" The name is self explanatory. Artists from T&T are going to be connecting with the artists from UK, we're really looking forward for that one.
GR: Could you please give a message to the reggae fans that are reading this and would like to know more about your faith and who Jesus is to you?
J Square: Serving Jesus Christ is not about having a religion-ship with Him. It's about having a one and one relationship with the Savior. I could only boast about what He has done for me and through me, so I feel His realness in my life. In order for you to know more about Christ you must give Him a chance in your life. Start off with a friendship, but trust me as you continue building on it one day you'll be intimate with Him and your life will never be the same again. To build the relationship you must feed your spirit man with things of the spirit (reading, praying, meditating on Him e.t.c.) and denying the flesh daily.
