Artist Name: DJ Nicholas
Birth Name: Nicholas V. Eccleston
Birth Place and Date: Kingston, Jamaica, W.I. October 29th
In his early years, he was known as 'nameless' and produced dub plates for sound systems such as 'Nemesis and 'Flawless.' During this period, he began searching for his true identity. One night, he had a dream in which he saw fire falling from the heavens. In his dream, there was a Rastafarian in his house saying to him that he must know himself. As a result, he sought refuge in the Rastafarian faith believing that Selassie was God and became totally immersed in the Religion.
Knowing that he was raised in a Christian home, he prayed for God's guidance because he was confused about the path he was taking. While studying the Bible intensely, he stumbled on Acts 4:12 which reads,"...There is no other name under Heaven given among men by which we must be saved." This passage made him realize that Jesus Christ is the only way. Praises be to God, he received this word with thanksgiving. As a result, he shaved his hair and turned fully to the Bible for guidance and inspiration. He made the bold step of attending a church crusade, where he got saved and was baptized.
With the passion of knowing Christ, came another passion...the passion of gospel music. He pursued his dream of doing God's music by approaching Tommy Cowan who recorded his first single 'Barrier'. Nicholas continued to produce songs such as "Pop off the Word" and collaborated with Kerron Ennis on "Holy Ghost Church." He has worked on projects for Prodigal Son, Chevelle Franklyn, Robert & Jeneve Bailey and Danny Browne. He has ministered in Canada, the USA and several small Island's sharing the stage with artists like Papa San, Stitchie and CeCe Winans. He has even opened for Kirk Franklin!
In 2006 Nicholas won the ARTIST OF THE YEAR Award and the NEW ARTIST OF THE YEAR Award at the Maja Awards in Kingston, Jamaica for his debut project "On the Shout." DJ Nicholas was tied for the most nominations at the Caribbean Gospel Music Marlin Awards 2006, receiving a whopping twelve (12) nominations. At the Marlin's held in Nassau, Bahamas he took home the NEW ARTST OF THE YEAR and DUO OF THE YEAR trophies. The latter was for singing with Kerron Ennis in the smash hit "Holy Ghost Church". He is also known as "Minister DJ Nicholas," a title recently given to him on stage by two ministers in Jamaica before a sea of witnesses. He is DJ Nicholas on the shout!!!...And there's no doubt.
Exclusive Interview with GospelReggae.com
GR: How did you begin doing music?
Nicholas: I was influenced before I became a Christian by the secular artist Bounty Killer.
GR: What is the most valuable lesson that you learned from your Mom or Dad growing up that you still apply today?
Nicholas: My Dad taught me to always be at peace.
GR: What has been the greatest mistake that you have made in ministry and learned from? How have you used this experience to change the way you approach ministry?
Nicholas: There's more than one, but the one that stand's out in my mind was speaking disrespectful to a Minister. I have learned no matter if I believe that I have been insulted by a Minister or anyone for that matter, It's better not to answer at all, or to answer softly.
GR: Is there any song that you wrote in the past that you are embarrassed about? Anything that you wish you could make disappear?
Nicholas: No, because it was recorded but not released.
GR: What's your favorite verse in the Bible and why?
Nicholas: Act'4 vs 12, That's where some of my greatest conviction came from.
GR: Name one thing that fans do not know about you.
Nicholas: I may always look serious but I am a jovial person.
GR: What goes through your mind before you go onstage at the average show?
Nicholas: To do my best, hoping God will do something new and also that souls will be saved.
GR: Do you prefer being in the studio or on the road??
Nicholas: both are great to me.
GR: If you could whisper in the ears of youths aspiring to start a music ministry like yours, what would you say?
Nicholas: Seek God in prayer, edify yourself with the word and give it your best.
GR: Are you working on any future projects/releases that we should look out for?
Nicholas: Yow 4
GR: Could you please give a message to the reggae fans that are reading this and would like to know more about your faith and who Jesus is to you?
Nicholas: Jesus is my 'Name above all names'.
