ALBUM DESCRIPTIONPaying homage to the roots of Jamaican music, 'Imisi (pronounced ee-mee-see) advances the genre with their landmark album "Forward" (Lion of Zion). Packed with sixteen reggae anthems, this release is refreshingly urgent yet enduring.
Brothers David (Tevita Kouso Kousa) and Jubilee (Siupeli Koula) Fohe have grown tremendously as songwriters and performers since their 2003 debut album "Visions of the Father" (Lion of Zion). While some artists may struggle with the 'sophomore slump', these brothers are flourishing, taking their music to a whole new plateau. This highly anticipated sophomore effort is sure to satisfy any listener with its vibrant vocals, sophisticated songs and inventive arrangements. Just take a listen to the compelling intro on the first track "Keep on Preaching", and you'll realize that these guys are taking no prisoners.
This CD was recorded entirely at the Zionic Sounds Dub Lab, in Los Angeles, CA. When approaching "Forward", award-winning producer Mark Mohr set out to replace the synthetic with the authentic. In contrast with their previous effort "Visions of the Father", Mohr opted for earthy textures and tones this time around instead of sterile digital sequencing. This entire album boasts live instruments; drums, bass, keys, guitar, percussion and a blistering horn section--creating a full-bodied sound reminiscent of Christafari's "WordSound&Power". Backed by an all-star cast of reggae musicians (including members of Christafari), 'Imisi's sweet textured voices and distinct dancehall style command the listener's attention from the first note to the last.
On Forward, 'Imisi convincingly melds Jamaican lovers' rock reggae with dancehall, seasoned with their own unique Polynesian flavor. This blend creates an international sound that is contemporary yet timeless. While Forward is primarily an English language recording, 'Imisi peppers in Jamaican patois on songs like "Purity and Truth", Tongan (their native dialect) on the "Tongan War Chant", Spanish on "Adelante" and Portuguese for the Brazilian massive on the rootsy "Israel".
Fusing an unshakably God-centered message with the full intricacies of bona-fide Jamaican reggae, these Pacific Islanders from the United Kingdom of Tonga are in great contrast with the message of today's top secular reggae acts. Packed with powerful spirit-engaging tracks, Forward is an evangelical musical ministry tool like no other with lyrics that are bold statements of faith, comfort and hope. This is reggae for your soul.
This mesmerizing album is loaded with inventive arrangements, melodic hooks, lush harmonies, vibrant vocals and inspiring lyrics. Stand out songs include the title track featuring Christafari, the soothing "Don't Worry," "No Other God," featuring Darrel Mansfield, and the stellar reinterpretations of "Rivers of Babylon" and "My Friend" (that previously appeared on their "Youth Exodus Live" album). There is honestly not one bad track on this album--It is all killer and no filler. If you only buy one gospel reggae album this year, make it "Forward". Pick up your copy today. YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

| Wow, loving the chorus vocals on "Israel" -- and you know why that track speaks to me! Also sounds like some nice live drum rock-style beat in "On and On." "Tongan War Chant (feat. Christafari)" has a nice vibe to it, kind of a relaxed dancehall feel. Overall a true live sound. Keep up the great work, Mark Mohr & 'Imisi! --Teddy from YERUBILEE "Messianic Roots Reggae from Jerusalem" | |||||||||||||||||||
