ALBUM DESCRIPTION

On his debut LP, "Rise Up," Troy Anthony fills a void in the Gospel Reggae genre by presenting a powerful, soulful voice that meets and even exceeds the quality of contemporary reggae singers such as Luciano, Bushman, and Burning Spear. Every single song on this album is a demonstration of his beautifully rich vocal style. His voice, however, isn't his only tool: Troy Anthony's lyrics are equally powerful and could easily stand alone as a conscious, uplifting collection of urban poetry and relevant sermon messages. Not one song on this exceptional debut is merely filler. Every tune is an excellent combination of rootsy riddims and Gospel message, and the CD's title track, "Rise Up," is no exception. Over a thick one-drop riddim Troy Anthony sings "We better rise up and go / Who is gonna let them know that Christ is the answer? / Rise up and go / Yeah, we got to let them know that Christ is the way!" Accompanied by bubbling organs and strong bass lines, this firm message couldn't sound sweeter. "Blood Sweat and Tears," featuring Firekid was first featured as one of the toughest songs on the second volume of DJ Frost's Street Light Mixtape series. Over a lush, energetic steppers beat Troy Anthony sings pure consciousness as Firekid chants in a dancehall sing-jay style. This commentary on the trials faced by many youths is as raw as it is inspiring: an excellent reminder that it is the responsibility of all Christians to care about the plight of underprivileged youth. Track 4, "For The Children," continues this message with profound lyrics over a smooth modern roots riddim. Though every song on this album is worth mentioning, stand out tracks include "Jah Bless We," a hip-hop influenced sing-jay/roots combination, "My God," a liquid smooth cut with a truly classic feel, and "Bless I am Blessed," a powerful song on the "Seasons" riddim (also featured on the Streetlight Mixtape Vol. 2). Overall, Troy Anthony's "Rise Up" album is a perfect blend of roots riddim, incredible vocal prowess and relevant Gospel messages. This is one CD that definitely belongs in the collection of every single Gospel Reggae fan! If you only buy one roots album this season, make sure this is it! Review by: D.M. Gahn

An outstanding album in terms of the message being Christ-centered and having great roots-rock beats. If you love Luciano and have been hoping, like me, that he goes "Judy Mowatt", here is an answer to prayer for the time being. Troy similarly has that rich, soulful voice. He is a great talent. Thank God for him!

Previous reviewer must have forgotten to make this a 5 as it is a very good CD indeed. Great modern reggae-rock feel.
Great roots
This album is awesome! I hadn't heard of Troy Anthony before, but I decided to purchase an album on the strength of the album description, and that it was predominantly described as Roots reggae, which I love. I wasn't disappointed. Troy's album is full of awesome music and lyrics that uplift the soul. All my reggae mates - most not christian (yet) - also love the album. Well done Troy. I look forward to more great music from you brother!
