ALBUM DESCRIPTION
Long before Matis Yahu brought us Hasidic Jewish reggae, Christafari pioneered Christian Reggae. In 1993 legendary reggae group Christafari broke new ground in the genre when they released their debut album "Reggae Worship" in the USA through Frontline Records. When this album caught the ear of dcTalk's Toby Mac, he quickly signed Christafari to his then upstart record company (Gotee). The rest is history. In 1994 the album was recorded in Nashville, TN and then released in February of '95. Produced by Mark Heimerman (Michael W. Smith, dc Talk, Stacie Orrico, tobyMac, Tait and Anointed) "Soul Fire" is still best selling gospel reggae release in the world (with approximately 150,000 units sold)!
In 1995, Christafari's "Soul Fire" release was distributed worldwide by Word Records and Sony/Epic and earned the band a coveted slot on the 46-city Reggae Sunsplash tour. That Summer the group hit the road on this extensive tour with reggae heavy hitters like Buju Banton, Wayne Wonder, Aswad, Big Mountain, Junior Tucker, Worl'-a-Girl, Sister Carol, Freddie McGregor, the Wailing Souls and Tommy Cowan. Shortly thereafter, Christafari became a household name in the close-knit reggae community.
"Soul Fire" includes a remake of Christafari's popular "Selah" (from their previous album), replete with a blistering hot horn section. Hit songs on this album include the timeless "Christafari", the lovers rock "Inside Burning", The rugged dancehall styled "Soul Fire" by Mark Mohr (aka Tansoback), the dub styled "Come Children", and the rootsy "Spirit Cry" sung by Erik Sundin (Earthman). Other standout tracks include "Listening" (you may have seen a video for this song filmed in Jamaica) and "Give a Little One Love". It is also noteworthy that "Sitting and Watching" was the last song that Jaibo Culture sang with Christafari until 2005 when he performed on Christafari's "Reggae Sunday School" release. Jaibo left the band less than a year after "Soul Fire" was released.
This album is a cornerstone of gospel reggae and earned the group comparisons to reggae pioneers such as Third World and Steel Pulse. Their signature combination of roots and dancehall replete with catchy hooks, lush harmonies and standout brass make "Soul Fire" a timeless classic.
