ALBUM DESCRIPTION
During his explosive secular career in the 90's, Papa San was the first reggae artist to have a #1 hit on the Billboard Dance chart with "The Programme." Over the years, this Jamaican music legend has influenced young musicians in genres from reggae to dancehall to hip-hop. In 1997, this spit-fire dancehall veteran turned his life over to Christ, and his music has never been the same. As a legend in his own right from the worlds of dancehall reggae and rap, Papa San has now become a standout in the gospel field.
With "God & i," his second Gospo Centric Records project, Papa San's celebrated lyrical mastery and rhythmic authority rise up once more in an explosion of joy and spirit-filled enthusiasm. On "Breathe Again," Papa San likens Christ to the very breath of life, rapping over a hooky, melodic female chorus with a punchy groove that brings out the strong convergence of dancehall and hip-hop music. The albums title song is a lilting, melodic jam with a more traditional reggae feel. On the other hand, "I Know" beats to a sparse, techno pulse, contrasting Papa Sans masterful word-juggling with a velvety, memorable chorus. In my opinion, the strongest track on this dynamic album is the contagious "Pop Style." The rest of the album follows suit, staying in the dancehall and raggamuffin/hip hop arenas. Rather than trying to become something that he is not, on "God and i," 'San remains consistent with his mighty grooves, unforgettable hooks and mile-a-minute lyrics. As I survey all of this veteran's past recordings, (both Christian and secular), "God & i" is by far Papa San's best album to date!
