ALBUM DESCRIPTION
Every once in a while there comes a voice which speaks to the common man, relating to his most bitter struggles, deepest sorrows and sweetest joys. It is one which conveys universal truth, touching on socio-political issues yet confronting the listener with a message that demands a response. It is a voice which accurately and unabashedly points out the wrongs and injustices, yet offers solutions. It is the voice of a revolutionary. That of the late Ras Shorty I is one such voice.
Jamoo Victory is an outstanding album filled with timeless truths proclaimed over rhythms of raw yet intricate beauty. Widely regarded as the inventor of soca music, Trinidadian Ras Shorty I (formerly Lord Shorty) turned his life over to Jesus Christ in 1977 amidst a bout of suicidal depression on the road in Toronto, Canada. He had asked God to show him a better way and if there was one, he would follow. Well, God did show him and Ras Shorty I followed. What God first revealed to him was that he was to get his own house in order. As a result, he began studying the scriptures and imparting God's wisdom to his children while also teaching them his musical craft. The result of such a life change was the gift of a new form of musical expression called Jamoo or Jehovah's music.
With the backing of his wife, Claudette and several of their fourteen offspring, Ras Shorty I recorded what should be regarded as a classic album with Jamoo Journey. Heavily infused with an organic blend of soca, folk and calypso, the album is packed with prophetic messages (both teaching and foretelling), including the anthemic "Change Your Attitude," the tender yet firm "Watch Out My Children," and the cautioning "Sing Anything." What is evident upon listening is that Ras Shorty I was a man who lived the words he sung. His music is infused with personal testimony, Biblical knowledge, and the power of the Spirit of God.
Musically, there is a wonderful variety of textures and tones featuring acoustic guitar, percussion, bass, flute, keyboard, and the choral voices of the Love Circle. The music of "Jamoo Journey" is somehow beautifully exotic, while at the same time very common. Many of the songs have very danceable rhythms, while others are perfectly suited to kicking back and listening in a meditative fashion. Far from frivolous party music, this is roots and culture with a message relevant to people worldwide of all generations. I know that's a bold claim, but I believe it holds very true. Songs like "Push The Creator Out" and "Change Your Attitude" both challenge the listener to change his ways, while warning of the ramifications of not doing so.
The messages of "Jamoo Journey" are deeply Biblical, yet very practical to the point where it is hard for anyone to sensibly argue the points and observations being made. With a strong emphasis on family values and societal teamwork and responsibility, Ras Shorty I has a way of bringing everyone together in unity through loving correction and encouragement while staying true to the call of Christ. It is clear that he believes the key to a better society is people turning away from destructiveness and to Christ. It is also evident, through songs like "One Partner" and "Family Plan" that he places high value on strengthening and healing marriages and families.
What makes Jamoo Journey so powerful is that it is absolutely applicable, practical and relevant here and now to you and me. With a raw, impassioned voice, and intensely honest lyrics, Ras Shorty I delivers an album filled with life-changing messages while letting you know that he deeply cares for you, the listener, whomever you may be, and the world at large. Ripe with sweet melodies, hip-swaying rhythms and calming pleas and assurances, "Jamoo Journey" is also a musical feast.
